IJR Open

At Independent Journal Review we’re committed to transparency. Not just in how we cover individuals and issues, but in how we operate both as a newsroom and company at large. On IJR Open, you’ll find our editorial practices, company policies and HR processes, ethics guidelines, review guidelines and more. If you have feedback on how we can be doing better, please let us know.

These are the policies followed by all employees of IJR. Here you’ll also find information about our recruitment and hiring process, our approach to personnel issues and employee benefits.

Culture Principles

At IJR we believe there are 5 principles that allow us to create a culture that values feedback and motivates growth.

Does the employee respond to requests (emails, slack messages, etc.) in a timely manner? Do they meet deadlines and communicate throughout the duration of the project?

How well does the employee respond to feedback? Do they proactively seek ways to improve? Do they work with their manager and/or other teammates to identify areas of improvement?

How well does the individual work with other members of their team and teams across all of IJR? Do you represent the team well externally (including to customers, vendors, industry peers, etc)? Do they offer to assist others when needed?

Can you trust that the employee will do what they say they will do? Does the employee follow through on projects and tasks? If a project is delayed do they work to get it back on track and alert the necessary people?

Does the employee take a solution driven approach to solving problems? If they see an issue, do they work to address it head on? Are they willing to move the ball forward?

Company Reviews

These reviews ask our employees to rank the company on a scale of 1 to 10 in the five areas we feel are key to the company’s success - People, Plan, Process, Promotion, and Product.

Do we have the right people in place for the teams to achieve their goals? Do the people on the team have the right skills and attitude to succeed?

Does the content we’re putting on our site reflect the mission? Are we providing readers with the best possible experience on site?

Do we have the right tools and structures in place to help you work more effectively? Are there processes that are unclear or too cumbersome? Are there additional tools we should look at adding? When process changes are implemented are these communicated clearly and effectively?

Has the executive team clearly communicated the plan for the quarter? Do you feel this plan is the best path for achieving our mission? Are there changes to the plan we should consider for next quarter?

Are we using the best tools available to reach as many people as we can? Does the external messaging we have in place reflect our mission? Are there other things we could be doing to share our mission?
